Giants: Eli’s greatest moment…

1 February 2008

Eli Manning’s most lasting satisfaction relative to the Super Bowl won’t be playing or winning the game.
He has been in big brother Peyton’s shadow all his life.  No matter how great Eli’s accomplishments growing up, Peyton was always older and achieving even greater glory.
The greatest moment for Eli was when Peyton called him and asked:  “Um, can I get some [...]

Patriots: Sneaky sneaky…

27 January 2008

Is he hurt, or are we being duped?
Patriots quarterback Tom Brady was recently seen walking around New York City wearing an orthopedic boot that is typically used to immobilize an injury to the foot or ankle.
Brady may indeed be injured, but I smell a rat – a brilliant, Patriotesque rat.
First of all, the what…
If Brady indeed has an [...]

Steroids: Congressional perfection…

12 January 2008

Boy, am I relieved!  Our country’s problems are all solved!
On February 13th, Congress will convene a hearing for Andy Pettitte and Roger Clemens to testify on their personal involvement with performance-enhancing drugs.
Pettitte has admitted to using human growth hormone on two occasions — both in 2002, before HGH was banned by baseball.  Clemens is accused of using steroids before they were banned [...]

South end of a north-bound horse…

17 November 2007

College GameDay on ESPN Radio is in Lubbock, TX, this weekend for the Oklahoma vs. Texas Tech game.
Texas Tech’s mascot is the Red Raider, signified by a charging, masked horseman.
Tech’s most despised rival is Texas A&M.  To demonstrate their opinion of their rival, they oriented the Red Raider statue at the center of campus so the hind-end of the [...]

Halloween costume ideas…

31 October 2007

Here are some costume ideas for a hypothetical college football Halloween party…
Tim Tebow as Superman, which wouldn’t be much of a costume since everyone would recognize him.  (On a related note, Superman will go as Tim Tebow.)
UCLA as a yo-yo, and will be mortified to find that Tennessee is already at the party wearing the [...]

Notes from Champaign; caskets and pockets…

21 October 2007

Yesterday, we took the radio show on the road to Champaign, IL, for the game between Illinois and Michigan.  From noon until seven pm, we broadcasted nationally while taking in the local scene just outside Memorial Stadium.
My first impression was that this group of tailgaters was rather sedate compared to others we’ve been this year — especially [...]

Notre Dame: Nightmare on Elm Street

24 September 2007

In their defeat to Michigan State, Notre Dame lost like the team that they are.  That’s actually a compliment, and a sign of improvement.
In their previous three defeats, the Irish lost like a disorganized rabble.  Against the Spartans, they lost like a young team trying to find its way, trailing 17-14 at halftime before losing [...]

Michigan: Wolverine Eggs

3 September 2007

The mighty Michigan Wolverines have laid a mighty Egg.  (Um, wolverines don’t lay eggs, but Wolverines sure do…)
They lost to 1-AA Appalachian State.  A 1-AA team had never beaten a 1-A team that was ranked anywhere in the AP Poll, much less one ranked 5th and expected to contend for the national championship.
As lousy as it must feel [...]
